The Greek Minister of Tourism, Harry Theoharis, has presented the plan to safely reopen tourism in mid May.
In a press conference given in the framework of the international Tourism Exhibition ITB Berlin, H. Theoharis said that May 14 is set as the date for the official start of the 2021 tourist season in Greece.
In April the country will start a first, pilot phase of receiving visitors, mainly from European Union countries and countries where the vaccination has progressed, such as Israel.
Τhe basic health protocols that will be applied at the arrival points are:
- To be allowed in Greece travelers must either have been vaccinated or have immunity due to recovery or will have been found negative in a recent COVID-19 in a test.
- All tourists may be subjected to random tests, the same way it was done last year. But, this year the country will use rapid tests, which means that visitors will not have to be kept in quarantine for 24 hours.
- What applies to Greek citizens, will also apply to tourists without exception, for example the obligatory use of a mask in public places
At the same time, Greece is trying to strengthen the National Health System infrastructure in all tourist destinations and priority is given to the vaccination of people involved in tourism services.
As the Minister of Tourism pointed out, “always having in mind the strict implementation of the health protocols, we aspire to open Greek Tourism on May 14th. Until then, we will gradually lift the restrictions, if this is allowed by the course of the pandemic. I emphasize, however, that all the opening dates are indicative and may change, depending on developments. “
Specialized protocols will be applied to all different sectors of the tourism industry.
“We guarantee that every tourist who chooses our country in 2021 will be completely safe” said the Greek Minister.
The press conference was entitled “Return to Greece: The journey to revive a unique experience has just begun”. The country’s new promotion slogan will be ‘All I want is Greece’
