A large crowd cheered as the members of the men’s water polo team of Greece arrived at the Athens International Airport wearing the silver Olympic medals on their chests, Wednesday noon.
The Greek team made history at the Tokyo Olympics as it won its first ever Olympic medal. Its previous best finish was fourth in 2004.
It was a great ride.
The Greek water polo team topped its group in preliminary play with four wins and one draw.
It made a big surprise when it beat (9-6) gold -medal favorite Hungary at the semifinal.
It fought a great battle against the Olympic gold medal holder Serbia at the final, the score remaining close throughout the first three quarters.
It finally yielded to Serbia supremacy, losing 10-13 but still bringing one out of the total four Olympic medals to Greece.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Greece won two gold medals (Stefanos Ntouskos/men’s single sculls in rowing and Miltiadis Tentoglou/ long jump), one silver, and one bronze(Eleftherios Petrounias/ men’s Rings).
At the final against Serbia, Dimitrios Skoumpakis, captain Ioannis Fountoulis and Angelos Vlachopoulos scored two goals apiece for Greece.
The Greek players also received national praise when they announced they will donate half of a 200,000 euros prize to wildfire victims throughout Greece.
The prize was given by shipowner and Olympiakos football team owner V. Marinakis.
“We consider it our duty to help by donating half of the amount to the wildfire victims,” team captain Giannis Foundoulis said in a statement released by the Greek Olympic Committee.
