A railway line linking Thessaloniki with Istanbul could be operational by 2019 following a Joint Expert Group on Rail and Intermodal Transport last week. The event, which took place in Greece’s second city, was hosted by the Infrastructure and Transport ministry and Turkish Railways. The line would carry both passenger and freight traffic.

The proposal would offer closer cooperation between the two countries’ railway operators for business activities, as well as in other territories including the Western Balkans, the Middle East and North Africa.

There was also an agreement on the need to consult with Bulgaria for a three-way co-operation in rail transport. Another meeting of the Joint Expert Group on Rail and Intermodal Transport is scheduled to take place in Turkey early next year.
