Håkan Samuelsson, the European Manager of the Year 2018!
European Business Press (EBP) presented the "European Manager of the Year 2018 Award" to Håkan Samuelsson, the President and CEO of Volvo Cars, at its Annual Meeting in Copenhagen.
European Business Press counts 38 leading European business newspapers and magazines in 27 countries among them publications such as the The Wall Street Journal Europe, Les Echos, Handelsblatt, Dagens Industri and Milano Finanza.
In 1991 EBP began presenting the award to top European managers and companies based on a vote of EBP editors. Among the recipients were profiles such as Ingvar Kamprad of Ikea, Bernd Pischetsrieder, former CEO of BMW and Volkswagen, Wolfgang Mayrhuber, the Chairman of Lufthansa, Luca di Montezemolo, the Chairman of Ferrari, and Tom Enders, the CEO of Airbus.
Mr. Samuelsson was appointed CEO of Volvo Cars in 2012 and has overseen a complete transformation of the company’s finances and operations in recent years. It achieved record profits and sales in 2017, with a 27.7 percent increase in operating profit and global sales of 571,577 cars. The results marked the company’s fourth consecutive year of record growth.
Under Mr. Samuelsson’s direction, Volvo Cars has introduced the Scalable Product Architecture and Compact Modular Architecture, which both underpin a completely revitalised range comprising seven brand new models in the past few years. As part of the new-look range, Volvo for the first time offers three globally available SUVs in the fastest growing segment in the industry.
During Mr. Samuelsson’s tenure Volvo Cars made an industry-first announcement in 2017 that every new Volvo car launched from 2019 will have an electric motor. Volvo’s commitment to electrification was further underlined by the launch of Polestar as a new stand-alone electrified car brand.
Mr. Samuelsson has also been instrumental in deepening Volvo Cars’ collaboration with its parent company Geely Holding of China and other strategic partners in the areas of autonomous drive, electrification and connectivity. A joint venture with Geely started in 2017 provides economies of scale in technology development.
In recent years he has received several other accolades for his leadership of the company, including the 2018 World Car Person of the Year Award and Germany’s prestigious Golden Steering Wheel automotive business award.
