The main opposition party, New Democracy (ND), has called on the government to call early elections once the bailout program ends, which is due to happen by the end of August, according to the Kathimerini.
ND spokesperson Maria Spyraki said earlier in the week that the SYRIZA-led government must seek a clear mandate and call for early elections after August as it has "run out of political fuel."
However, SYRIZA spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos told the Athens News Agency that speculation Greece will have to seek a precautionary credit line and implement further austerity measures after the program ends in August “has been refuted.”
The latest that prime minister Alexis Tsipras can call a general election is towards the end of 2019. Numerous polls conducted over the last year or so have given ND a comfortable lead.
