Greek president Prokopis Pavlopoulos referenced Lord Byron as he brought up the subject of the Parthenon Marbles to Prince Charles, who he hosted yesterday during the latter’s visit to Greece.

Pavlopoulos said he hoped that the close bonds of friendship between Greece and the UK would lead to the return of the Marbles ‘in order to restore the unity of this glorious cradle of our Civilization.’

He referred to the tradition of Philhellenism, dating back to the time of the Greek War of Independence and referenced Lord Byron, who played a pivotal role in early years of the war.
