The Syros International Film Festival (SIFF) is preparing for its 6th edition since its founding in 2013. The number of film festivals across the Greek Islands as well as on the mainland is welcome news for a country, which is continuing its attempts to becoming more appealing to filmmakers both in Greece and abroad.

The recent news that the BBC were initially refused permission to film at the Temple of Poseidon was met with national criticism. A few years ago the Jason Bourne franchise was forced to film a scene depicting Syntagma Square on the Spanish island of Tenerife after the producers were frustrated in their efforts to film it on location. However, since then, the ministry of culture has made efforts to make the country more appealing to production companies and a recent tax rebate was welcome news.

SIFF kicks off at the end of next week and will highlight the work of Greek filmmakers both in Greece and abroad. It is an achievement in itself that SIFF is preparing for its 6th in a climate that is still extremely tough.
