Athens Stock Exchange rises to highs last seen in 2015
The Athens Stock Exchange (ATHEX) index rose on Monday May 8th to levels last seen before capital controls were brought in during 2015. The general index ended at 763.42 points, adding 1.25 percent to Friday’s 753.99 points. Trading volumes also exceeded the €100m mark.
The latest rise makes it 10 consecutive sessions of growth for the ATHEX, which has not been since January 2006, before the worldwide recession and Greek debt crisis.
European markets have generally risen recently, in part because of the recent French presidential elections, which provided a welcome boost for the European Union given Emmanuel Macron’s pro-EU stance.
