Greek and German presidents inaugurate 'Learning from Athens' at the National Museum of Contemporary Art
Greek president, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, along with his counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German president, inaugurated the Documenta 14 exhibition last weekend at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) in Athens on April 29th.
The artistic director of Documenta 14, titled ‘Learning from Athens’, Adam Szymczyk, explained his reasons for Athens to co-host the event alongside Kassel, Northern Germany. “The proposal reviews the idea of the institution reversing the usual hitherto role of the host with the organization of an exhibition in which it will be the guest with the prospect of a mutual lesson from Athens.”
Mr. Pavlopoulos spoke of the significance of the world-renowned exhibition and stressed the importance of the European Cultural Heritage and the impact it has across the world. Mr. Steinmeier emphasised the exhibition’s focus on the current political and economic problems. He also made reference to the ‘Learning from Athens’ title being appropriate given that Athens is the cradle of democracy.
The exhibition continues in Athens until July 16th will run in Kassel from June 10th until September 17th.
