Tsipras and Trump meet in Washington
Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras met with US President Donald Trump at the White House with the latter claiming that ‘Greece is coming back’ in reference to the country’s apparent path towards economic recovery. It was a somewhat ironic meeting given that the two could be considered to be on opposite sides of the political spectrum.
Trump addressed the ongoing financial crisis that Greece has gone through in his opening remarks and emphasised the support of the US: “Greece has gone through a lot over the last years, and we will discuss ways to help, because Greece has been a great friend and a loyal ally”, he said. Trump also commented on how Greece and the US are cooperating in various ways including the upgrade of the Greek military fleet.
Tsipras, who has in the past been openly critical of Trump, stressed that he hopes that the two nations will enhance their cooperation even further: “Greece is a partner to the US in a very sensitive region. We share the same values of freedom and democracy”. Tsipras also visited Chicago during his visit to the US.
