Athens one of the most popular destinations for Qatar Airways
Greece continues to play a vital role for Qatar Airways with Athens being amongst its most popular destination for the airline’s customers. Many factors may be involved in this; one of them given Greece’s close proximity to the Gulf State in comparison to other European countries.
Qatar Airways’ senior Vice President for Europe, Jonathan Harding, spoke at a recent event at Athens International Airport (AIA), where he emphasised the importance of the Doha-Athens route.
“Especially with the development of tourism and other industries, such as energy and shipping, we have seen an increase in the number of our passengers and our predictions for the future are positive,” he said.
The airline, which first start operating routes from Qatar to Greece back in 2005, operates three daily flights and ranks first in passenger volume of non-European carriers in Greece. Passenger traffic on the Athens-Doha route is expected to reach around 300,000 this year.
Qatar’s undiminished loyalty to Greece is a continued asset to AIA in that it provides a gateway to Europe after several airlines began cutting their routes during the early years of the debt crisis. AIA has since weathered the storm and has reported a year-on-year increase in passenger traffic since 2012. In addition to that, some 20m passengers used the airport this year.
