Athens is among 20 European cities to be nominated for the title of ‘Best European Destination 2018’. The European Best Destinations (EBD), is an online competition based in Belgium, which has been active since 2009. One of its main objectives is to promote culture and tourism throughout Europe. Last year’s award was won by the Portuguese city of Porto. Athens came fourth and aims to do even better this year.
The nomination for the Greek capital is further evidence of the year-on-year increase in tourism it has enjoyed, as has Greece in general. Last year saw Athens International Airport surpass the 20m passenger mark, which has in turn led to an expansion of the airport to cope with further passenger traffic over the coming years.
