The Athens stock exchange (ATHEX) experienced an unusually volatile day of trading yesterday (Thursday February 1st). While trading began the day strongly, all the early gains were lost before another surge saw it close slightly higher than the previous day.
The general index ended at 886.44 points, adding 0.87% to Wednesday’s 878.83 points. Greek banks also had a generally positive day, advancing 3.57%, as Alpha jumped 6.58%, Piraeus grew 4.57% and Eurobank rose 2.11%.
Major Greek-based companies had a mixed day. Examples include GEK Terna, up 3.14% and Jumbo up 2.51%. However, Lamda Development finished the day down 1.39% and Hellenic Petroleum down 1.37%.
