The Economy Minister Dimitris Papadimitriou has resigned hours after his wife, Alternate Minister for Social Solidarity Rania Antonopoulou, stepped down on Monday following revelations that she received €23,000 in state rent subsidies for a property in the neighbourhood of Kolonaki, according to the Kathimerini.
The scandal shows the sheer hypocrisy of the hard-left SYRIZA party and is evidence that corruption is still rife in the country whatever the side of the political spectrum.
Greek PM Alexis Tsipras accepted the resignation and thanked Papadimitriou for his services. The two resignations have fuelled further speculation that a cabinet reshuffle could be imminent.
ND’s leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis critisised the government, saying it took “three whole days of intense reaction” before Tsipras demanded her resignation.
