A recent opinion poll conducted by Pulse for Skai has given the main opposition New Democracy, led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, a 10% lead over SYRIZA. The latest poll continues the trend of a healthy lead for ND with the next general election set for next year.
Asked whom they would vote for if general elections were to be held now, 31.5% of respondents said ND and 21.5% said SYRIZA. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has felt the pressure in recent months on many fronts and the poll shows that the majority of Greeks have lost confidence in his party.
Turnout at the last general election, which took place in September 2015, was exceptionally low at 56.6%, the lowest ever recorded in a Greek legislative election since the restoration of democracy in 1974. Post-election analysis determined voters’ apathy and disaffection with politics and weariness after being continuously called to the polls. With the next election looming, it remains to be seen if the turnout will be higher.
