The CEO of Lamda, the group involved in the Hellinikon project, the old Athens Airport, expressed optimism that work will finally begin next year. The airport has been sitting idle since closing back in 2001 when the new Athens International Airport opened.
CEO Odysseus Athanasiou said: “I could safely say that by this time next year Hellinikon will have an image of works underway rather than of neglect,” he said. “In order to boost investment, it is necessary to have strong political will and a very clear timetable.”
Athanasiou also stressed that a coordinator must be in place to mediate between investors and the state, adding “in a country where institutions can improve, people make the difference, whereas transparency is the best way to move forward.”
